The Details
One ordinary St. Patrick's day, we got a call from our doctor's office to call and get results about the ultrasound that we had on Monday. My belly measured small so they took closer look. After work on Tuesday, I called our doctor and they told me to go to the hospital with the option to have a c-section or to be induced with about a 75% chance of ending up with a c-section. The smaller babies don't tend to tolerate labor as well, so that is why so many end up with c-sections. The doctors hypothesized that my placenta had given him its all and he needed to be born to grow and get nourished. We checked in the hopsital and knew right where to go since we took a tour on Sunday thinking that was well in advance. It was in advance none the less. We opted to be induced and got a hormone to ripen my cervix Tuesday night and Pitocin in the moring on Wednesday. After all that, by 7:00 Wednesday night, I was only dialated to 3 centimeters. Our doctor again offered us to choose a c-section at that point to or she would give us 1 more hour. (We had Dr. Stas. Several of our friends out here will know who that is because several of our ward members go to the same OB-GYN group) We had our home teacher, who is so extra faithful planning on coming at 7:45 before we knew we had the 8:00 cut-off point. It couldn't have been timed better. Jason and Tyler Horner, our home teacher, gave me a blessing at like 7:50 ish. Right after Tyler left the doctor came and said, "Here's the moment of truth." I made it to 6 centimeters! We were all glad (the doctor and us of course). By 9:00 when they check again, he was on his way and I started pushing and he arrived at 9:37. He did so well tolerating the labor. The hospital staff was so great. They had 2 Neonatologists and a NICU nurse as well as all the other regular nursing staff at his birth. They were so ready for him. He passed all of his tests including showing he was a good sucker with a bottle and his blood sugar stayed well above where he had to to stay without being sent to the NICU. They don't let little friends go without food because they don't have the fat reserves. The test he wasn't passing was maintaining his temperature. On the 3rd check, he was going to go to the NICU if he didn't maintain. By that point his temperature was high, so he got to stay with us. He passed in the nick of time. They continued to check his temperature and he has done really well. He just has a hood and 2 blanket policy. If you unwrap him, he starts shaking immediately. All the nurses keep saying how they never have 4 lb babies on this floor (the normal post-partum floor) and how small he is. The few times he has gone to the nursery, we always find the nurses holding him and the other babies in their beds.
We love having him and are very attached. We are so grateful he is doing so well and for all the love, support and prayers of so many friends and family. One amazing detail, my parents are in another continent. They are currently on vacation in Brazil and Argentina. We have been able to talk to them since Jason's parents contacted them for us. He squeeks at the ends of his cries which is quite comical.

Way to go, Wend!!!
I like the one-eyed pirate look! haha. My favorite picture is the first pic with Jason because you can see Carter's little face so well & you can tell how tiny he really is (iddy-biddy baby!) in his daddy's big arms.
